NSO-6 Year-end Assessment and Planning Workshop in Boracay
National Statistics Office (NSO) Region 6 conducted a Year-end Assessment and Planning Workshop on Civil Registration last December 13-15, 2006 at the Queen's Beach Resort in Boracay Island. In spite of the stormy weather brought by typhoon Seniang, the seminar turned out to be a successful one. The three-day activity was participated by the City and Municipal Civil Registrars from the provinces of Iloilo, Guimaras, Capiz, Aklan, Antique and Negros Occidental. Engr. Norman Julag-ay, Regional Director of NSO-6, spearheaded the activity which improved the knowledge of the participants about their jobs and at the same time foster camaraderie among City and Municipal Civil Registrars from all over the region. Also, on the first day of the event the Municipal Civil Registrars of Iloilo and Guimaras provinces held their Christmas party along the beach.
Thieves get $1 million in antiques
WEST PALM BEACH -- Andrew Vogel was at the verge of tears when he spoke of his stolen trailer carrying 4,000 English antiques worth about $1 million. Vogel, 43, and his wife, Kelly, were staying at a tucked-away Hampton Inn Hotel near West Palm Beach last week and were headed back to Chicago after the Winter Antique Show in West Palm Beach. .
Rare African art to be sold Feb. 17-18 at Red Baron's
(Atlanta, Ga.) - About 200 rare West African artifacts from a huge collection, amassed in the '40s and '50s by a botanist working in Liberia for the Firestone Company, will be sold as part of a four-estate auction slated for February 17-18 by Red Baron. The objects will be offered up in group lots (masks, wooden figures, jewelry, bronzes, etc.). All are museum quality and fresh to the market. This is a traveling exhibition waiting for a permanent home, said Paul Brown, vice president of Red Baron. Every item is tagged, like in a museum. Brown added the collection has been exhibited at the Pensacola Museum of Art and was almost sold to the Peabody Museum at Harvard in 1974. But a deal was never finalized. It's been in secure, climate-controlled storage ever since. The African art is sure to draw intense bidder interest, but it is only one in a galaxy of show-stopping lots typical for a Red Baron sale.
Sometimes, it's best to see greatness from afar
I have learned over the years that when my husband describes something to me, he rarely exaggerates. In fact, the more unbelievable he makes something sound, the more likely it is he's telling the truth. Steve started work at the News Journal about 18 months before I did, so by the time I walked into the newsroom, he'd told me about most of the people on staff. He informed me that Lou Whitmire guy was actually a very nice WOMAN. He suggested I share cute stories about our puppy with Karen Palmer, the office animal-lover. He told me to make friends with Deb Mehl, who's one of those behind-the-scenes people who makes everything work. .
